INTER MILAN CAPTAIN LAUTARO MARTINEZ BACK IN THE TREATMENT ROOM

Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez faces another spell on the sidelines after reinjuring his calf.

Martinez underlined his importance to Inter’s Serie A title bid with a double in last Sunday’s 5-2 demolition of Roma, the Argentina striker’s first appearance after seven weeks on the treatment table.

But medical tests on Friday revealed a mild muscle strain in his lower left leg, which he originally injured on February 18, with Inter announcing his “condition will be reassessed in the coming days”.

It has been reported Martinez will miss the league leaders’ trip to Como on Sunday as well as Friday’s visit of Cagliari, plus the Coppa Italia semi-final against Como on April 21.

Yann Sommer is eyeing a league and cup double this season and the 37-year-old goalkeeper is putting any speculation about his future to one side until the end of the season.

The veteran Swiss’ contract is set to expire at the end of June but he is Cristian Chivu’s number one and he side-stepped questions about whether he will remain at the San Siro beyond the end of this campaign.

“I’m very happy to play here, for this club, for these fans,” Sommer told Italian sports news programme Sportsmediaset.

“I also really like the stadium. I’ve spent three years at Inter so far, and it was a really great time. Then we’ll think about what happens after the end of this season.”

Former Inter and Romania defender Chivu took charge of Inter last summer, succeeding Simone Inzaghi, and has led the club to the top of the league, seven points ahead of defending champions Napoli.

“We are in a good situation: we have worked hard to get this far and now we have seven very important games left,” Sommer added. “The Coppa Italia and the league are two big objectives this season.

“We want both the cup and the Scudetto. But now it is very important to go step by step and stay focused on what we want to do well.

“The differences between Chivu and Inzaghi? I don’t like making comparisons. We had some wonderful moments with Simone and now with Cristian.

“Last year we had a good season: we missed out on the Scudetto by one point, but that’s football. Right now, we’re not thinking about finishing the season, but rather focusing on the next match.”
