Guests at a luxury Edinburgh hotel were evacuated on Sunday night following a gas leak. Emergency services raced to The Caledonian Hotel on Princes Street just after 9pm on March 8.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it received reports of a gas smell coming from the basement. Crews were on scene for over two hours until it was confirmed the building was safe.
They requested the support of gas supplier SGN, who dispatched engineers to the hotel as firefighters evacuated the building. A leak was subsequently discovered in the gas meter. There is no evidence to suggest any issues with the wider gas network.
A picture from the scene shows a several fire engines and emergency vehicles parked on nearby Rutland Street.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 9.06pm on Sunday, 8 March, to reports of a gas smell in a hotel basement on Princes Street in Edinburgh.
“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances and a specialist resource to assist partners at the scene in isolating the source of the gas smell. There were no reported casualties, and crews left at 11.25pm after ensuring the area was made safe.”
Dan Brown, SGN spokesperson, said: "The fire service requested our support at Caledonian Hotel last night due to a suspected gas leak.
"Our engineers carried out investigations and identified a leak on the hotel’s meter installation. We made sure the area was safe, and the hotel has been advised to contact its meter asset owner to make the required repairs."
The Caldeonian was approached for comment.
