In less than a month, residents of Tottington will need to head to the polls to cast their vote for a new local representative – but who are their options?
A by-election is taking place in the borough following the sudden departure of former councillor Luis McBriar. The Totty local quit his post after two years in service to pursue a dream job in public service – that requires him to be politically neutral.
Many had hoped the election of his successor could be rolled into the local elections on May 7. This would have saved the council £20,000 to £25,000 – cash it could certainly do with as it works to plug a £14m budget hole this year.

But after two electors demanded a vote, residents are being asked to head to their nearest poll stations between 7am and 10pm on Sunday, April 2.

The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Tuesday, March 17, and the deadline to register to vote by proxy or by post is 5pm on Wednesday, March 18. The applications can be made online.
Residents in Tottington will still need to attend the local elections in May, where they will vote for another candidate after the end of coun Yvonne Wright’s term.
