A “picturesque” riverside village could see almost 200 new homes built, as a developer has unveiled its proposals. David Wilson Homes is also planning to build a community centre, with health services and a shop, off Hurndall Avenue, North Fambridge. The site is farmland, measuring about 15.08 hectares, and is approximately 350 metres from North Fambridge Train Station.
It comes as the developer is building 75 homes to the south-east of the site, after the proposals were agreed in 2019.
The town is under the Maldon district, and the annual housing requirement has risen to 575 homes, an 85 per cent increase, according to the developer. The proposed development “helps address that need” by delivering up to 198 dwellings, including 40 per cent affordable housing.
The developer is proposing 119 private-sale homes, ranging from two- to five-bedroom properties, and 79 affordable homes, ranging from one- to four-bedroom properties, including rented and shared ownership. The plans also include a community centre, which could be a medical centre or retail space, centrally located on the wider site.
The village, which has featured in TV and films, is on the River Crouch and in the Dengie peninsula. It featured in the Doomsday book as 'Fanbruge' and the area has a strong sailing and maritime history.
The plans state: “In conclusion, it is considered that the proposal constitutes an acceptable development for the site in planning terms and that, if approved, will make a positive contribution to North Fambridge. The Proposed Development will provide a range of tangible community benefits, which have been formulated through the pre-application process.”
