THE CAPTURE WRITER ADDRESSES SURPRISE TWIST AS MAIN CHARACTER KILLED OFF IN NEW SERIES

The Capture's writer has addressed a shock twist that saw a main character killed off in the first episode.

The BBC thriller - which looks at the world of deepfake technology - made its long-awaited comeback for a third series on Sunday (March 8), four years after its second run.

The action picked up a year after Rachel Carey (Holliday Grainger) broadcast a deepfake of a government minister, which exposed the UK intelligence service’s clandestine video manipulation programme.

The series saw the return of many cast members, including Paapa Essiedu as home secretary Isaac Turner. But viewers were stunned when he was killed off minutes in, with the character shot as he appeared at a press conference.

Creator Ben Chanan told Radio Times: "You see why in episode six, he, according to certain forces, had to go. But, it's really all about kickstarting the next journey for Carey."

"She obviously really got on with Isaac and she cares about him, and there's even a little frisson between them," he went on. "So, when he gets shot and killed, it's personal. It feels personal to Carey."

The Capture premiered in 2019 and a second series aired in 2022, so fans have had a long wait for another instalment.

In the new episodes, Carey is now acting commander of Counter Terrorism Command and there is an ongoing inquiry into the unlawful use of Correction, the video manipulation programme.

"And then it happens: a brutal and exceptionally well-coordinated act of terror aimed right at the heart of the British establishment that leaves behind just one witness," a synopsis said.

"The more Carey investigates, the deeper she is drawn into an unfolding geopolitical crisis that infects the British political establishment, the security services, and the media. The conspiracy reaches deep into the State, but just who is pulling the strings?"

So far the new run has gone down a storm with viewers, with one posting on X after the series began: "Fantastic series three opening episode." "WOW, what an opener episode to series three," someone else wrote on the platform.

"Sensational first episode," posted another impressed viewer, as somebody else remarked: "The Capture season three is going to be one hell of a ride."
